Brief introduction into Peacocks
Operating in
over 900 different locations and employing in excess of 6000 people Peacocks are one of the largest fast clothing
retail chains in the United Kingdom. The retail chain operates over 200 stores in 12 other countries as well.
Peacocks History and Facts
The company was founded by Albert
Frank Peacock in 1884 and opened his first store in Warrington, Cheshire. The “Victorian Penny Bazaar” sold
nearly everything from the store. The Peacocks Penny Bazaar continued to expand in the coming years with more
stores opening. In 1940 Albert’s son Harold relocated the company’s headquarters to Cardiff in Wales, this
had a big impact on the businesses which improved logistics and communication as many of the Peacocks stores
were located in South Wales and Southern England.
The retail
chain carried on expanding in the early 90’s and in 1997 Richard Kirk the chief executive at the time lead a
management buy-out and in 1999 the company was was floated on the London Stock Exchange.
In 2002 the
Peacock Group acquired the value retailer Bon Marché which was then privately owned for £51.3 million, Gurchait and
Gurnaik Chima (The Chima brothers) founded Bon Marché in 1982 and developed the business into operating 258 stores
around the UK.

Retail chain is currently (at the time of writing this article) the second largest discount retailer in the United
Kingdom. Matalan currently are the largest with the Peacocks chain in close second place.
The
management have since decided to take the Peacocks chain international and the first store in 2004 opened in
the Bahrain.
2006 saw the
Peacocks retail chain get delisted from the London Stock Exchange and once again become a privately owned
business.
The company
has changed its products line to cater for “value for money fashion” clothing for men’s, women and children, this
has seen the company expand to new heights and revenue has exploded. The Peacocks retail chain surpassed 500 stores
in 2008 and continues to opens stores within the UK as well as in international locations.
